Exercise Ball Bingo

PART I

PART II

For lab D, I decided to teach a lesson on exercise balls. It would be my last lesson I would teach. Instead of just focusing on how to do two or three different exercises using the exercise ball I decided to go a little out of the ordinary and make a Bingo game out of it. The game would have eight different exercise ball exercises along with four other activities that didn’t involve the exercise ball. It turned out to be a great idea. Everyone seemed to love it. I also made up some rules that all the students had to follow. The first rule was that every activity had to be done with a different partner. The second rule was that each activity had to be done with a different partner. The two partners then had to sign their name in a box showing that they completed the activity and it was with a different person.

I feel like I did a better job teaching this lesson. I explained how to do everything clearly and the certain rules that everyone had to follow. What I liked the most was that each person had to switch partners and complete the activity. This gets student to interact with all the other students in the class instead of just staying with one partner the whole time. What I did a much better job on was giving feedback to everyone. I got to a lot of people explaining different ways they can improve and giving encouraging feedback. I did a really good job on my time coding form. For most of the lesson the students were doing some type of activity. The exercise ball was something I was not too familiar with until this lesson so I enjoyed teaching it.

Kubb - The Viking Game!

Kubb, pronounced "koob", is a Swedish game that was played by Scandinavian Vikings over 1,000 years old on the Island of Gotland in the southern part of Sweden. The game involves throwing wooden sticks at other wooden blocks, kubb, and the team to knock them all down first wins. Me and my partner Mike decided to teach this fun game to the class for our Lab C.

On Monday, Mike and I taught Kubb to the entire class. We were not able to get actual Kubb equipment, but we got what we thought was the next closest equipment resembling it, gym rings and bowling pins. It actually worked out better because it really isn't that safe or good for the gym floor to be throwing wooden blocks around. Mike started out teaching the class how to throw the ring at the kubb (the bowling pins), and the certain rules you have to follow. I helped him set up his equipment for everyone while he was teaching. Mike did a good job teaching and then it was my turn. I set up a mini kubb game in order to help the students understand the game better. I thought that instead of having them listen to to me explain the rules, I would have two people demonstrate and play the game while I explained it. I had two volunteers come out and it went pretty smoothly. What I need to work on is remembering all the little things that I have to tell the class like the C.F.U. and the safety statement. I always forget about them and then I'll just try to add it in to my lesson somehow. It would be a lot easier if I just remembered to say them at the right time. I also need to know how to prevent behavior problems. Some students got into an argument and it kinda took me by surprised and I hesitated on what to do. Knowing these procedures is very important Another problem I had were that the fields were not completely set up after I finished explaining how to play, so I had to waste a little time fixing that. I need to make sure everything is set up before I let the class go do the activity next time. It seemed like everyone had a good time playing kubb and I enjoyed teaching it.

This was the third time I taught the class and I feel like I've improved. We all had to have a lesson plan this time and it helped me out a lot. By writing up the lesson plan, it helped me remember everything I needed to do and say. Having a clear and informative lesson plan will help me be a better physical educator. I also thought I did a pretty good job on my time coding form. The one thing I would try to fix is the management time. Since the fields were not set up in time, students were waiting for me to fix some of the fields before they could begin. I still had a large amount of activity time which was good for everyone. I still need to work on being more specific while giving feedback. I walk around a lot and give positive feedback, but I am always worrying about moving around and trying to get to every student that I don't stop at a certain person and help them if they need it. This is something I need to improve a lot on. My transcript I felt was pretty good. I gave a lot of information and I felt I spoke clearly and loud enough. Everyone understood what I wanted them to do and we got right into the game. Kubb was a challenge to teach, since no one ever played it before, and I feel like Mike and I did a great job teaching it.

Lab B - Ultimate

I didn’t do a very good job teaching for Lab B. My job was to teach a 3 v 2 drill for ultimate Frisbee. I did not put as much time as I should have into it and as a result, I did poorly when teaching it. I should have started figuring out what my lesson was going to be a lot earlier because when I went to start it, I realized I didn’t know what to do. I looked at the ultimate planning unit sheet and saw four different things I had to teach. I thought I had to teach all four but I really only had to teach the activity next to my name. I decided to try and fit all four activities into one short 6 minute lesson. I found out that I only had to teach the one activity that morning, right at the start of class. So all during class, while my peers were teaching, I tried to figure out what I was going to teach and it just did not come to me. You can tell by my transcript that I didn’t know what to say a few times and I wasn’t clear enough when explaining the activity. This cost me a lot of time trying to explain the game and the students missed out on a lot of the activity. By not knowing exactly what I was doing while I was teaching, it made it hard for me and the class because I did not explain some aspects of the game enough. I also need to work on giving more feedback. The way this activity was set up, it was hard to give feedback, but I should have made a better effort trying to get specific with names and pointing out ways to improve their success. This was a good learning experience for me so I do not make the same mistakes in the future.

Lab A Part 2

Here we go again. A month into the semester and we are teaching our second lesson.

Teaching for the second time was a lot easier then the first. It may have been easier because it wasn't a surprise this time, but I felt a lot more comfortable standing in front of everyone and explaining how to catch the football. I was able to explain things more clearly and I felt everyone was learning something. After watching my lesson, I realized I need to talk a lot louder. While I was teaching, I thought I was talking loud enough, but to my surprise I wasn't at all. I couldn't believe at how quiet my voice actually was. Its almost like you have to scream to your students so that everyone can hear. Talking loud will keep students interested. After looking at my time coding form, I was happy with the amount of time I used for instructing my class in the beginning. They were in the activity after about a minute after the lesson started.
What I need to work on is not saying "uh" a lot. You can see in my transcript that I use it every now and then. By being more confident in what I am teaching will help me stop saying "uh".
I was not happy with the amount of feedback I gave. I mostly just walked around saying good job. I need to be more specific with the student and talk to them directly. As you can see in my feedback analysis form, I was only able to give specific feedback to three people. This is not enough feedback and I need to work on giving out more specific details.

These videos are really helping me improve my teaching. Already I feel as if I have improved a lot. They let me see what I am doing correctly and what I am doing wrong instead of having someone tell me. These videos are a great way to help me become the best physical educator I can be.

Volleyball

I thought I did a good job explaining cues and instructions but I needed to show more excitement and interest while teaching. Your voice and body language can tell how much enthusiasm you have while teaching. In my case, I felt I spoke confidently and clearly, but I stood straight up and did not move around at all. The only movements I had were me going through the steps of how to serve and bump a volleyball. I need to be more outgoing while explaining cues and instructions. It looks like I was bored and did not want to be there. The more interest you have in an activity, the more interested your students will be. Adding a little competition is always a good thing to keep up the interest and attention. I should have added some type of contest. It would help by making kids want to learn and participate. Another error I had was not walking around giving feedback to the class while they were practicing the serve. I realized this mistake and fixed it while the class was bumping the volleyball.
